Our latest show features a range of Pop artists from Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Damien Hirst and Takashi Murakami, and the Queen City’s own Stephen Wilson. The gallery’s walls are filled with famous faces, such as Warhol’s appropriated image of Teddy Roosevelt as a Rough Rider from his “Cowboys and Indians” series and Peter Blake’s glittered version of Marilyn Monroe. While Basquiat is represented by a limited edition print released by his estate in 2016 and printed by Flatiron Editions. Flexible is a 24-color screenprint based on a painting
the artist created on the wall of his Venice, California studio in 1984. Using his characteristic aggressive style, Basquiat depicted a male figure with arms raised which has been described as “a storyteller, entertainer, and purveyor of oral history from West African culture.” Twenty-first-century Pop is illustrated by Damien Hirst’s typical butterflies and dots and Takashi Murakami’s take on Japan’s anime culture.IMG_5992FullSizeRender
