Shepard Fairey (American, born 1970)
Shepard Fairey is a contemporary graphic artist who emerged from the street art scene, following the likes of Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. He originally was recognized for his Andre the Giant Has a Posse and Obey images on posters, murals, stickers, and clothing, but later became widely known during the 2008 U.S. presidential election for his Barack Obama Hope poster. Recurring themes and concerns are found in all of his work–portraiture, propaganda, and political power.
He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and is based in Los Angeles.
