Charles Williams (American, born 1983)
Charles Williams is a contemporary realist painter from Georgetown, South Carolina and a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). From utilizing oils for the basis of landscapes, each painting captures his reflection of human emotions in response to and in sync with the natural environment. While his recent large-scale, figurative oil paintings are based on a frightening childhood experience in which Charles was swept out to sea by a sudden current. He offers a vulnerable glimpse of both the wonder and horror of that experience, laying bare the sensation of being consumed by natural forces. In addition, he confronts stereotypes associated with the cultural and psychological barriers to swimming he experienced as a young African-American.
